Ajmal Hameed is also recognised for his expertise in the field of International Chinese Economic Law. In 1981 he was the only lawyer in the British delegation travelling to the 27th Congress of the International Chamber of Commerce in Manilla, where he spoke of the emerging economic ‘reassessment’ in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and its implications for Western commerce. In 1982, he became a member of the UN Working Party in New York, charged with drafting a model law for international commercial arbitration, and urged that the law should include provisions to cater to specific patterns of trade with China. His views attracted interest from the Chinese government and it was through this growing relationship that he found himself at the forefront of enabling information exchange between the PRC and many prospective Western commercial partners. His work in this field included arranging sponsorship for Chinese officials to train in financial institutions and public and private organisations in Europe.

In 1983 Ajmal Hameed convened a meeting of leading European lawyers to study rapid developments in the legal system of the PRC. The meeting led directly to the formation of the International LawChina Society.

In February 1984, at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, he led a delegation of distinguished European Lawyers to the PRC. During this visit he suggested the establishment of an international Trade Conciliation Centre in Hamburg (with representation in Beijing). The centre was opened in 1987 by the Hamburg Minister of Justice, and charged with conciliating commercial disputes between Europe and China.
